Pyrenees Wildflower Week

7 night self guided walking holiday

  • 7 night guided walking holiday
  • Grade 1: Relaxed hiking
  • Expert local flower guide
  • 4* Hotel Tierra de Biescas

The Pyrenees are known as the flower garden of Europe for good reason. The wild flowers are spectacular particularly early summer when hundreds of gentians and orchids are in flower.

Olatz – a local wild flower expert and qualified hiking guide – leads this holiday and with her local knowledge, you’ll see all of the areas specialities.

The itinerary is specially put together to visit excellent wild flower locations. On the rest day we’ll visit the raptor rescue centre and learn about bearded vulture conservation.

You’ll still be hiking during the week but the walks will be fairly gentle with plenty of time to discuss the flora and wildlife that you’ll see.

Walks will explore various locations each with slightly different climate and species.

Sunday – Arrive Biescas

Pick up at either Zaragoza train station or airport and transfer to Biescas. Briefing followed by your evening meal – you’ll eat out a various local restaurants in the village during the week.

Monday – Ibon de Piedrafita

The meadows that lie under the kilometre high cliffs of the Partacua are an excellent spot for early summer flowers with lots of trumpet and spring gentians. Orchid varieties present are fragrant, elder-flowered, early purple and butterfly orchids.

Tuesday – Villages of the Serrablo

Today we’ll walk in the Serrablo which is famous for its 11th century Romanesque churches. We’ll hike to the abandoned village of Susin. The drier climate here is perfect for pyramid and ladies orchids and blue grass lily which grows in large clusters alongside the path.

Wednesday – San Juan de la Peña

The cliffs around San Juan de la Peña are home to colonies of griffon vultures. We get close up views of these huge birds while enjoying superb vistas across the Pyrenees.

Thursday – Ainsa & Raptor Rescue Centre

A rest from hiking today and a visit to the historic town of Ainsa. We’ll have a guided tour of the raptor rescue centre and learn about the bearded vulture conservation program. Lunch taken under the arches in the 12th century plaza.

Friday – Rio Aguas Limpias

A walk alongside the ‘river of clean water’. Excellent venue for wild flowers as well as butterflies such as the Apollo.

Saturday – Ordesa Valley

A visit to the National park where we’ll hike under huge beech and silver fir with the cliffs towering above us.

Sunday – Depart

Transfer to Zaragoza train station or airport.

My second trip with Hike Pyrenees and what a treat! Great guides, marvellous flowers. So many orchids! Even though it was supposed to rain most days, they managed to find just the right hikes so we saw many flowers, different parts of the valley, avoided most of the rain. Bravo to Hike Pyrenees and especially Olatz who knew every flower we saw.
