There’s no need to hire a car, transfers to the routes and to/from Reus airport or Tarragona train station are included, so access from Barcelona is straightforward.
Perfect for independent travellers, this holiday lets you immerse yourself in the beauty, flavours, and heritage of Priorat at your own pace.
You can start the holiday on whichever day you’d like and the itinerary is six nights with 5 days walking.
There are two hiking options each day –
The paths are generally easy to follow and detailed maps and route cards are provided. GPS hire is available with all of the tracks and maps marked. On the first evening you’ll have a briefing to talk you through the routes, options, weather and answer any questions that you may have.
Day 1 – Arrive in Cornudella de Montsant
Transfers are included from Reus airport or Tarragona train station which has regular trains from Barcelona. Early evening you will have a briefing about your week ahead and the hikes.
Day 2 – Siurana a land of warriors and princesses.
This circular walk takes us up to the village of Siurana, the last stronghold of the moors in Catalonia, taken by the Christian armies in the year 1153. Siurnana is a beautiful village, perched on the cliffs and is recognised as one of the most picturesque villages in Spain.
Short option: 6 km (4 miles), ascent 350 metres (1150 feet)
Longer option: 14 km (9 miles), ascent: 660 m (2165 feet).
Day 3 – Montsant and the Siurana Valley plus the hermitage of Sant Joan de Codolar
Again, you have a choice of two routes.
The easier of the two takes us along the Siurana valley between the massifs of the Montsant and La Gritella, climbing up the pass and village of Albarca and returning along the base of the imposing cliffs of the Serra Major of the Montsant, calling in at the hermitage of Sant Joan de Codolar.
Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles), ascent: +/- 450 m (1500 feet).
The high route takes us up along the base of the Montsant cliffs, climbing up to the highest point of the national park, the Roca de Corbatera at 1168 metres and returning along the ridge before descending to the Hermitage of Sant Joan de Codolar.
Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles), ascent: +/- 850 m (2800 feet).
Day 4 – La Morera de Montsant – Cami de Cartoixans through wine country
Today you hike between the village of Cornudella de Montsant where you spent the first three nights, to the village of la Morera de Monsant which will be your base for the remainder of your holiday.
Today’s walk takes us along the Cami de Cartoixans, an ancient trail that winds through the vineyards to the Carthusian monastery of Scala Dei which dates back to the 12th century. This trail was largely lost until 2005 when it was re-marked by the National Park Service of Catalonia. Hiking through Mediterranean forest and world-renowned vineyards, you can make a stop at a winery en route, for a glass or two of the famous Priorat wine.
The harder option is actually shorter at 13 Km but with a big climb of 1100 metres which will take you over the main massif of the Montsant mountain with extraordinary views of the county.
Shorter route: 15 km (9.3 miles), ascent: +/- 500 m (1600 feet).
Longer route: 13 km (8 miles), ascent: +/- 1100 m (3609 feet).
Your luggage will be transferred to La Morera at the Hotel Balcó del Priorat during the day and be waiting for you on arrival.
Day 5: The High Priorat Wine Country
Hiking through the famous vineyards of the Priorat with their steep slopes and slate soils. A walk heading down to the village of Poboleda (a good stop for lunch) and back round to La Morera de Montsant – 14 Km with 535 metres of elevation gain.
Or a second option of 11 Km and 425 metres of elevation through the historic vineyards of the Cartoixa of Scala Dei.
Day 6: The Graus of the Montsant
The main part of the Montsant Mountain looks inaccessible as it appears to be one solid block of limestone, however, the cliffs are cut through by gullies and ravines, known locally as Graus. Today’s hike will take us up and through some of the Graus of the Montsant, to the top of the imposing cliffs on the main massif.
Low route: distance: 12 km (7.5 miles), ascent: +/- 400 m (1300 feet).
High route: distance: 16 km (10 miles), ascent: +/- 900 m (2950 feet).
