7-night self-guided walking holiday in eastern Spain

This self-guided walking holiday in the mountains of Beceite explores one of the quieter and lesser-known regions of eastern Spain. Close to the border between Aragón, Catalonia and Valencia, the area offers dramatic limestone peaks, forested valleys and remote mountain passes, far from the busier walking routes of the Pyrenees.

Walking at your own pace using detailed route notes and GPX files, you’ll follow a series of scenic trails linking traditional villages and mountain viewpoints, with luggage transfers and welcoming small hotels arranged throughout. The combination of varied landscapes, peaceful trails and a sense of discovery makes this an excellent choice for walkers looking for something a little different.

Overview

  • 7-night self-guided walking holiday
  • Perfect weather for autumn, winter and spring hiking
  • Grade 2/3: mid-level hiking, but with options to shorten or lengthen the hikes
  • Remote hiking in a beautiful but unknown area

The village of BeceiteExplore the Passes of Beceite, a spectacular but little known mountain range. The lovely village of Beceite will be your base for the week, where you stay at the fantastic Fabrica de Solfa - an old paper mill converted into a wonderful hotel. The weather here is perfect for hiking nearly year round and is excellent in the spring and autumn.

Each day you explore a different area of the range and there's plenty of variety in the hiking with both limestone and conglkomerate canyons to hike in, peaks to reach and towering cliffs to marvel at.

The walking is mid level but there are plenty of options to either lengthen or shorten the routes, or to take a rest day. Some of the hikes need a short lift to the start or finish, and we've two options - you can either hire your own car, or we can give you lifts to the start/end of the hikes.

Itinerary

You can start the holiday on whichever day you’d like and the itinerary is seven nights with 6 days walking.

For the fit, there are longer options and side trips taking in extra peaks and viewpoints. The terrain varies from gentle paths through woods to some fairly rocky sections underfoot even on the easier routes.

The paths are generally easy to follow and detailed maps, route cards and GPS tracks are provided. On the first evening, you’ll have a briefing to talk you through the routes, options, weather and answer any questions that you may have and we are around during the week to offer advice if needed.

We've produced an itinerary that shows you the best hiking in the area with plenty of flexibility and variety. Accommodation for the week is at the Hotel Fabrica de Solfa which has an excellent restaurant that you dine in each night.

Day 1 - Arrive Beceite

Arrive in Beceite - on the first evening you will have a briefing about your week ahead. Evening meal at the lovely restaurant at Fabrica de Solfa.Parrissal Gorge

Day 2 - Parrissal Gorge

A short 10-minute drive in the morning to the parking at the entrance to the Parrissal Gorge - one of the most famous spots in the area. You follow this beautiful high-sided gorge using pasarelas - a walkway just above the river level. Eventually, the gorge narrows to the point you can’t hike any further. On your return journey, there are two optional additional loops that climb higher up the gorge for spectacular views. When you reach the car park/bar area at the entrance of the gorge, you can either get picked up from there or lengthen the route by hiking back to Beceite via the Ermita of San Miguel (adds 4.5km, 300 metres ascent).
Shortest distance: 8 km, ascent 50 m (there and back with no side trips)
Mid distance (with the two additional loops): 9.7 km, 370 metres ascent
Longest distance (inc. return to Beceite via San Miguel): 14.2 km, ascent 670 metres

Day 3 - Penyagalera (1029 metres)

Penyaglera is a wonderful conglomerate summit lying just outside of Beceite. A spectacular days hiking as you climb steeply up to the summit for incredible views over the area. The descent path doesn't look doable from above, but in fact, it's an easy (albeit steep) descent down to the Rio Ulldemar where there is a brilliant swimming or paddling spot.

Distance:13.6 km, ascent 915 metres
Note: If this route is too strenuous or steep for you, there's an alternative route that heads from the same start point back to Beceite, without passing over the summit.

Day 4 - Salt de Beceite

Today's route starts at the waterfall known as Salt de Beceite, and passes by the pretty Ermita of San Magdalena. You can hike either all the way back to Beceite, or alternatively, finish your route at the medieval town of Valderrobres with its lovely castle and winding streets.
Full Distance to Beceite: 16.7 km, ascent 494 m
Shortened distance (ending at Valderrobres): 9.2 km, ascent 420 metres

Day 5 - Periganyol (1033 metres)

Today you hike straight from the hotel, heading up to a lovely ridge which you follow to the summit of Periganyol. From the summit you get fantastic views over a huge area, looking in one direction over the Passes of Beceite range, and in the other towards lots of villages, all perched on hilltops. You head back via a different route, with the option to take a side trip to a large reservoir, before heading back to Beceite on a country lane.
Distance: 11 km, ascent 622 metres

Day 6 - The Estrets Gorge

Today's hike explores the gorge of Estrets, a conglomerate canyon that is totally different to the limestone canyon of Parrissal that you hiked on the first day. Beautiful rockpools and coloured rocks. The route passes through the gorge, then does a small circular route before you head back through the gorge again.
Distance: 13.7 km, ascent 495 metres

Day 7 - Rocas de Masmut

A spectacular final day's hike and a fitting finale to your week. You make a complete circuit of the wonderful Rocas de Masmut - red conglomerate cliffs several hundred metres high. You can also tackle one final thousand-metre peak with the optional ascent of La Tosa (1194m).

Short distance: 11 km, ascent 450 metres
Distance (inc ascent of La Tosa): 18 km, ascent 750 metres

A lovely hotel converted from a historical paper factory. The dining room and terrace overlook the river Matarraña. The bedrooms are lovely and all en-suite. There is free wi-fi throughout the hotel.

The hotel's restaurant and menu are superb, giving a modern flair to many traditional local dishes. You are free to choose from their a la carte menu and we're certain you won't go home hungry!

Most rooms have great views over the river, otherwise, they face the pretty plaza and Ermita of Santa Ana.

Walking Levels & Logistics

When is the best time to hike the Beceite self-guided itinerary?

The Passes of Beceite itinerary runs through the autumn, winter and spring, from 15 January to 15 May and 1 October to 15 December. These seasons offer excellent walking conditions, with cooler temperatures, clear views and quiet trails. Spring brings fresh greenery and flowing rivers, while autumn offers warm days and beautiful colours. Winter is generally mild at these lower elevations, making it a great option when the high Pyrenees are snow‑covered.

Are the routes easy to follow?

Yes. Our route descriptions are detailed and in general the paths are easy to follow. In a couple of places the paths aren't so clear but we highlight these spots in the route notes so that you can take extra care. We also provide GPS tracks for all of the routes. These can be used with a GPS application on your phone and are a brilliant aid to navigation.

I've read that you provide Garmin InReach Satellite Communicators, what do they do?

A Garmin InReach is a small, tough satellite communicator that lets you stay in touch even when you’re out of mobile coverage. It uses the Iridium satellite network to send and receive messages, share your location, and trigger an SOS in an emergency. It’s a useful bit of kit for remote mountain areas where phone signal can’t be relied on. We provide these to every self-guided group.

What is the terrain like in the Passes of Beceite?

The Passes of Beceite is a lower‑altitude limestone region. Walks explore a rugged limestone range with dramatic gorges, high passes and wide-open views, but they are not high‑mountain terrain. Walks include a mix of canyon paths, ridge routes and forested passes, with no scrambling or technical sections.

Will I be hiking with other hikers?

This is a self-guided itinerary and although other hikers may start on the same day as you (particularly if you arrive on a Sunday), this isn't guaranteed. Some of the days follow routes where you won't meet many other hikers during the day and you need to be comfortable hiking and navigating on your own.

Could we add a night in a mountain hut?

Yes, you can book to stay in Refugio Respomuso. You can see more information about the extension here

Booking & Practicalities

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes - insurance to cover accidents in the mountains and illness is compulsory. The insurance must cover mountainous terrain and hiking. We also recommend general travel insurance to cover flight delays, lost luggage and for cover if you need to cancel your trip due to injury/illness before you travel.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel your trip, the deposit of 125€ per person is non-refundable. If you have paid your balance and cancel with 7 weeks notice or more, we will refund 50%. If you cancel with less than 7 weeks notice, no refund will be made. Remember, most travel insurances will cover this cost if you need to cancel due to injury.

Can I extend my stay?

Yes — let us know when booking, and we can help arrange extra nights in Beceite.
