Discover the Priorat in a unique way with our hiking adventure! Immerse yourself in a journey through breathtaking landscapes, from rugged mountains to lush vineyards. Begin by exploring the picturesque village of Siurana, the last Moorish stronghold in Catalonia. Continue your adventure along the stunning cliffs of Montsant or through the charming Siurana Valley, with both easy and challenging routes available. On the historic Cami de Cartoixans trail, hike through ancient paths between vineyards and savour the world-famous Priorat wine.
Enjoy a rest day with a show cooking experience and olive oil tasting at an olive farm with thousand-year-old trees. End your adventure in the majestic Prades Mountains, climbing to the highest peaks and taking in awe-inspiring natural beauty. This is an unforgettable experience in the heart of Catalonia!
This is a dual-level trip with two hikes offered each day. One hike will be an easy-level route and the other a mid-level route. In general, these routes will be a bit easier than our routes in the high Pyrenees.
Saturday – Arrival in Cornudella de Montsant
Transfer from Barcelona airport or Sants train station to Cornudella (approx. 1 hr 30 mins journey). Upon arrival, the guides will give a briefing about the week ahead explaining the routes, how everything works and giving you a chance to ask any questions. Our evening meal will follow the briefing.
Sunday – Siurana a land of warriors and princesses
This circular walk takes us up to the village of Siurana, the last stronghold of the moors in Catalonia, taken by the Christian armies in the year 1153. Siurnana is a beautiful village, perched on the cliffs and is recognised as one of the most picturesque villages in Spain.
Short option: 6 km (4 miles), ascent 350 metres (1150 feet)
Longer option: 14 km (9 miles), ascent: 660 m (2165 feet).
Monday – Montsant and the Siurana Valley
Lower route: Siurana Valley
The easier of the two options takes a transfer to the high village of Albarca in the morning. We hike back to the hotel, along the base of the imposing cliffs of the Serra Major of the Montsant, calling in the hermitage of Sant Joan de Codolar.
Distance: 8 km (5 miles), ascent: 350 m (1150 feet).
High Level: Montsant cliffs
The high route takes us up along the base of the Montsant cliffs, climbing up to the highest point of the national park, the Roca de Corbatera at 1168 metres and returning along the ridge before descending to the Hermitage of Sant Joan de Codolar.
Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles), ascent: +/- 850 m (2800 feet).
In the evening we’ll have a tour and wine tasting at the local cooperative vineyard.
Tuesday – La Morera de Montsant – Cami de Cartoixans through wine country
Today’s walk heads directly outr from the hotel, taking us along the Cami de Cartoixans, an ancient trail that winds through the vineyards to the Carthusian monastery of Scala Dei which dates back to the 12th century. This trail was largely lost until 2005 when it was re-marked by the National Park Service of Catalonia. Hiking through Mediterranean forest and world renown vineyards, we’ll make a stop at a winery en route, for a glass or two of the famous Priorat wine.
The shorter route stops at the pretty village of La Morera de Montsant where we’ll be transferred to the monastery for a visit. The longer route continues on, hiking directly to the monastery.
Shorter route: 10 km (6.2 miles), ascent 400 metres (1300 feet)
Longer route: 15 km (9.3 miles), ascent: +/- 500 m (1600 feet).
Wednesday: Rest day – showcooking and olive oil tasting
A short transfer to the village of Cabaces takes us out of wine country and into a land of olive trees, where the Mediterranean climate and the cool breezes from the Ebro Valley create perfect conditions for olive cultivation. We’ll visit the farm of Miro Cubells, a family that has been working this land for 10 generations and have trees that are over 1000 years old. A guided walk through the olive groves culminating in a visit to the mill, with a show cooking of a traditional Priorat lunch and a tasting of their wonderful oils.
Thursday – The Graus of the Montsant
The main part of the Montsant Mountain looks inaccessible as it appears to be one solid block of limestone, however, the cliffs are cut through by gullies and ravines, known locally as Graus. Today’s hike will take us up and through some of the Graus of the Montsant, to the top of the imposing cliffs on the main massif.
Low route: distance: 12 km (7.5 miles), ascent: +/- 400 m (1300 feet).
High route: distance: 16 km (10 miles), ascent: +/- 900 m (2950 feet).
Friday – Prades Mountains
Today we visit the Prades mountain range. A short 15-minute transfer takes us to the village of Prades, the highest village in the area and historically the second most important town in Catalonia, after Barcelona, although today it is a village with a population of less than 1000 people. Today’s hikes will take us up to the highest point of the region at 1203 metres altitude, hiking through oak forests, past caves and natural rock bridges and calling at one or two hermitages en route.
Shorter route: distance: 12 km (7.5 miles), ascent: +/- 326 m (1069 feet).
Longer route: distance: 13 km (8 miles), ascent: +/- 900 m (2500 feet).
