The Quebrantahuesos (the ‘bone crusher’) cycle race is one of the biggest cycle events in Europe. Last year over 10,000 cyclists took part from over 25 countries. It’s a fantastic event with a great ambience, magificent scenery and challenging cycling. The route is 198km passing between Spain and France with 3500 metres of ascent accumulated over four mountain passes: Somport (Cat 2), Marie Blanque (Cat 1), Portalet (Cat Special) and Hoz de Jaca (cat 3).
In 2018 the race is on the 23rd June. Our special Quebrantahuesos cycle camp gives you the best possible prepartion for the race and during the week we’ll head out and tackle each of the cols individually and also drive the route so that you know what to expect come race day.
The race is really popular and the 2018 event is already fully subscribed but we have 10 guaranteed entries for this years event – sign up and grab yours quick!
All of the training rides will be fully supported with both a bike guide and support vehicle. Our cycle guides Javi and Alfonso have ridden the Quebrantahuesos race many timnes themselves and will give you lots of advice on the best approach for the race.
If you feel the full Quebrantahuesos is a bit too much for the legs there is the option of taking the shorter and more manageable Treparriscos which takes place on the same day from the same starting point. This is a route of 85km with 1500 metres of ascent without any super steep sections and is acheivable for any regular rider.
The holiday is based at the excellent four star Hotel Tierra de Biescas which has excellent facilities including a sauna and an indoor and outdoor pool. The hotel has bike storage and lays on early breakfasts for race day and special cyclists evening meals for you to carb load before the race!
Read this great overview of the race in Cycling Weekly or visit the official Quebrantahuesos website
The training week itinerary is designed to give you the best possible preparation for raceday. We’ll cycle as much as the course that is possible during the week and also drive the route explaining where the mechanical and food stations are and hints and tips for the tricky spots during the route.
Sunday – Biescas
Arrive in Biescas from Zaragoza – we pick up at the airport or train station and can transport your bikes if you have brought your own. Organise bikes and have a briefing about the week ahead followed by the evening meal.
Monday – training cycle – Portalet (Special category) – Laruns – Biescas
For our first days training we’ll tackle the third of the Quebrantahuesos cols – Portalet on the Spanish/French border. We’ll drive up to Portalet and start cycling from there, beginning with a lovely long descent down to Laruns where we’ll turn around and start heading back up to Portalet again. The scenery is superb throughout and it’s a spectacular road. Once you reach Portalet we’ll continue with the descent to Biescas. Portalet-Laruns-Portalet-Biescas (85km, 1,500 m accumulated ascent).
Tuesday – training ride – Biescas – Larrede – Sabiñánigo – Biescas
A more relaxing day to recover energy cycling in the valley south of Biescas known as the Serrablo. There are quite a few ascents but all are small – under 100 metres – so not too tiring. It’s a lovely quite country road with virtually no traffic and the route passes by old medieval churches and villages. Distance: 63 km with 633 metres acumulated ascent.
Wednesday – training ride – Sabiñanigo – Somport (Cat 2) – Sabiñánigo
Today we start at the race start point and cover the first section of the race up to the first col of Somport. The route starts with a fairly flat section to Jaca before you turn north and climb up the Valle de Aragon, past the ski resorts of Candanchu and Astun to the col of Somport at (1632m). We’ll head back to Sabiñanigo either by the same route or taking a couple of diversions or side trips. Distance: 112km, ascent 1896 metres.
Thursday – Rest day
A relaxed wake up and at midday our guides will be at the hotel to pick you up a drive around the complete itinerary show you complicated points, drink and food stops and no doubt a nice lunch stop in France.
In the afternoon you can book a massage at the hotel or relax in the sauna or pool.
Friday – rest day and race preparation
A relaxed start to the day and a final check over the bikes and kit for the following day. Late afternoon we’ll head down to Sabiñanigo to collect your number, race infomation pack and maillot. All of the bike and kit manufacturers have stands and it’s a great place to see all the latest kit, buy some extra energy gels and soak in the pre-race atmosphere. In the evening the hotel prepares a special cyclists meal with plenty of carbs to give you energy for the following day.
Saturday – race day
An early start as the Quebrantahuesos race starts at 7:30 am and Treppariscos at 8:15 am. We’ll ride down in the vans parking five minutes cycle from the start line. At the end of the race there is a great competitors area with the biggest paella’s you’ve ever seen and free beer! We’ll have something to eat, collect our certifcates and medals (on which you get your name and time etched on), finish basking in the glory of completing teh challenge and then head back to the hotel. The evening meal is another cyclists special and after if you have any energy left you can go out partying!
