Blogging from the Pyrenees
Phil & Anna have been living in the Pyrenees for over 17 years and love the culture, wildlife and mountains here. We run Hike Pyrenees, which organises guided and self guided hiking holidays in the Pyrenees and other areas of Spain. Our blog tells about our adventures hiking, snowshoeing and skiing in the Pyrenees and we hope to explain some of the fascinating flora, fauna and history of the area. We hope you enjoy reading!

French Pyrenees Walking holiday: Following the Pioneers of Pyreneism
Our new French Pyrenees holiday took us on a journey, following in the footsteps of the first Pyreneists, exploring the giant cirques of Gavarnie, Troumouse, Vignemale and up the famous Col du Tourmalet.
Refugio Week – summiting Marbore
Fantastic Refugio Week last week with the highlight being summiting a snow covered Marbore (3248m) and looking the Cirque de Gavarnie far below. Clear blue skies and lots of snow made for fantastic hiking. Our first two day trek in the Valle de Tena took us to the…

The walking season is in full swing here in the Pyrenees and we’ve had a couple of great walking holidays already this June with a Lakes & Valleys and a Discover Ordesa walking holidays. We’ve had some fantastic hikes visiting high alpine pastures,…
Fuerte de Coll de Ladrones

La Cuniacha animal park near Piedrafita welcomed 3 new Lynx cubs this spring. Apparently they were born very early and the park wardens are concerned that they won’t make it through any cold spells. Keeping my fingers crossed for them as they look incredibly…
Space Shuttle above Biescas
Just watched footage of the shuttle Atlantis take off which reminded me of some interesting pictures I took last summer of the space shuttle and the International Space Station orbiting above Biescas. I’d seen that they were due to pass over that evening about…

Blacks nature guides
I find Blacks Nature Guides really useful. Good mix of an identification fieldguide with interesting information about each species too. Wild Flowers of Britain and Europe covers most of the species we find here in the Pyrenees although misses some of the Pyrenean…
Gentians and Orchids – the Pyrenees spring to life
The mountains of the Valle de Tena are looking beautiful and bursting into life. Spring gentians, trumpet gentians and elder flowered orchids are covering the sunnier meadows around Ibon de Piedrafita and above the village of Sandinies. Elder flowered orchids…
