Blogging from the Pyrenees
Phil & Anna have been living in the Pyrenees for over 17 years and love the culture, wildlife and mountains here. We run Hike Pyrenees, which organises guided and self guided hiking holidays in the Pyrenees and other areas of Spain. Our blog tells about our adventures hiking, snowshoeing and skiing in the Pyrenees and we hope to explain some of the fascinating flora, fauna and history of the area. We hope you enjoy reading!

French Pyrenees Walking holiday: Following the Pioneers of Pyreneism
Our new French Pyrenees holiday took us on a journey, following in the footsteps of the first Pyreneists, exploring the giant cirques of Gavarnie, Troumouse, Vignemale and up the famous Col du Tourmalet.
BBQ at Santa Elena
Had great lunch up at Santa Elena earlier this week with our friends Eva and Oscar. There’s a stone refugio behind the church with an open fireplace to barbeque on. Gorged oursleves on chops, pancetta and longaniza.
El Gigante de Sallent
In bars and restaurants in Biescas and Sallent de Gállego you will see pictures of one of the valleys most famous residents – Fermín Arrudi Urieta, more commonly known as ‘the giant of Sallent’. Born in Sallent de Gállego in 1870 Fermín reached 2.29 metres (7 feet 6…
Snowshoeing in the Ordesa Valley
Ordesa has had lots of snow this winter and you can snowshoe straight from the Pardera car park where there’s several feet of snow. The valley looks beautiful in the snow and I’ve been over there a couple of times in the past few weeks – one time…
Change of Zaragoza transfer times
Hike Pyrenees transfer times from Zaragoza on Sundays from 7th July onwards have changed slightly due to the RyanAir flight times changing. They are now at a better time a few hours earlier. This affect transfers from both the train station and airport as we often…
First Egyptian vultures of the year
Saw my first pair of Egyptian Vultures this year while out cycling near Biescas. Lucky enough to get a couple of good pictures of them strutting around a field. Seems very early in the season to see them – they migrate to north Africa and the Middle East in the…
Snowshoeing at La Cuniacha

Cycling to Espierre
After a week of staying in due to high winds, snow and too much officework the sun finally came out today so I headed up to the villages of Espierre and Barbenuta on my bike. Conditions were pretty snowy and icy on the 4×4 tracks I usually cycle on so headed up…
New Costa Blanca Rockfax guidebook
The Costa Blanca’s a great place to climb. Anna and I along with Ken and Hannah have been there climbing a few times. Great in the autumn as you can still be climbing in shorts in November. There’s a huge number of crags there and I haven’t even…
