Hello lovely blog and website. We are just over the mountains in France and the temperatures are very uncomfortable in plus 35 degrees. Our friends have just spent a week near the Alps in a refuge with temperatures around max 27 degrees. We are looking for a walk or place to stay stay in your area for about a week in Jul/Aug. Please advise if you have some ideas of somewhere 'cool'. Thanks very much regards Colin

Lovely read! Punta del Pacino sounds like a perfect route for easing back into hiking, especially with those wildflower views and varied slopes. The PeakFinder tip is really useful too. I’d love to know which month you’d recommend most for seeing the best mix of orchids, butterflies, and clear summit views.

What a wonderful summer hiking round-up! The mix of Valle de Tena, Ordesa, Picos de Europa and Beceite looks incredible. Hi Oz,
For maps, the best option is to get the PRAMES 'GR11 senda pirenaica' guide. This is a Spanish guidebook but contains 19 sheet maps that cover the complete route. Otherwise you need to but about 15 or more individual maps. PRAMES is the publisher and the ISBN is 978-84-8321-481-7. Tomorrow I'll post a couple of links to some good guidebooks that you can get on Amazon.
Cheers,
Phil

Nicely written! Any recommendations with regards to the best way to plan to walk the GR11? A good guide book? The best map? Etc.

Hi Neal, the crags at Tramacastilla are SE facing, so they will be in the shade later in the day. UK Climbing has a reasonable map for getting there (https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crags/el_bubon-10384/#overview), but in a nutshell, from the village of Tramacastilla de Tena, you take the road north, towards Sandinies. At the first (and only) roundabout, you take the last exit (SW), which is a 4x4 track. Follow this a short way, round a tight right-hand, then left-hand hairpin bends (flat) and park a little way up. It's a very short walk to the crags from here.

All-day shade can be quite hard to find, as most crags in the region face SE to SW. Rapún, near Sabiñánigo, does have a north-facing sector, but it's quite stiff for the grade.

Other crags worth looking at are: Escarilla (convenient but a bit artificial, as it's actually a man-made cutting), La Sarra (lovely picnic spot), and Balneario (Baños) de Panticosa.

There's a guidebook for the area: https://www.climbing-guide.eu/climbing-guidebook-valle-de-tena-11691/

And you can find a bit more info on the following websites:
https://www.valledetena.com/wp-content/uploads/pdfs/valle-de-tena-croquis-escalada.pdf
https://www.lanochedelloro.es/index.php/valle-de-tena/

Have fun and let us know if you have any more questions.

Hi, lovely set of notes here - would you be able to provide any more details on how to find the crags? visiting the area in the summer.
Also, is there sectors that are shaded?
