Walking Gear for Hotter Climates

When it comes to the choice of walking holiday Spain has some great options. The country benefits from one of the warmest, driest climates in Europe, making it an excellent choice for a walking break. The mountainous terrain, however, produces a varied climate and the weather can change quickly, particularly at altitude.

For much of the year, it is vital to prepare for hot weather. Temperatures of more than 30 degrees are not uncommon, and some areas of the country receive more than 3000 hours of sunshine per year. In contrast, the highest peaks in the Pyrenees can receive snow for more than 120 days each year. Come and walk a section of the GR11 which stretches the entire width of the Pyrenees from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.

Hotter climates present a challenge for walkers. Whilst staying cool is important, ensuring your clothing is breathable so your skin remains dry is equally so. On this count, modern fabrics have improved dramatically in recent years. Wicking fabrics, made of high-tech polyester, draw moisture away from the body. The material does not absorb moisture like cotton, but instead spreads it, allowing it to evaporate. There are a variety of wicking materials available, so it`s worth doing a bit of research.

Choosing lightweight, versatile clothing is the priority. A breathable base layer should be combined with insulating mid layer and windproof and waterproof outer shell. Paclite garments combine maximum breathability with minimum weight, and are a great choice. Lightweight water resistant trousers with zip off legs are an excellent solution, and save on packing space. These types of technical clothing will allow a lighter pack, and can be added and removed to ensure clothing is best suited to the environment.

Take the time to accessorise properly before embarking on any serious walks. Protection from the sun in the form of a hat or cap - and plenty of high factor suncream - is one of the fundamentals of an enjoyable walking holiday in Spain. Ensure hydration levels are kept up, and a hydration pack may be a good idea on longer walks.

Walking poles are a great aid on more challenging routes. Other additions such as a first aid kit and a pack of survival rations will ensure safety in the event of any mishaps. Weather fronts can sweep in quickly and it is always best to take precautions.

Footwear is also an important factor. In hot climates, such as Spain`s for most of the year, the emphasis is on lightweight and breathable shoes or boots. Boots with layered waterproof materials and a breathable mesh are the best option, and a fine range is offered by Merrell in the UK.

The difference between dedicated hot weather walking boots such as these and cheaper alternatives will be clear.
