10th Anniversary celebration

  • Special 10th anniversary celebration holiday
  • Only for previous Hike Pyrenees guests
  • 7 night guided walking holiday based in Ainsa
  • Great hotels and restaurants

To celebrate ten years in the Pyrenees we are holiday a special holiday for previous Hike Pyrenees guests. We are planning this holiday to be really special with not only great hiking but also other activities such as a vineyard visit with wine tasting and a visit to the lammergeier feeding station.

The hiking will explore the eastern side of the Ordesa National Park including the Pineta Valley, Garganta de Escuain and the Añisclo Canyon. Ken, Hannah and Phil will all be guiding so there will be plenty of choices of hikes with three hiking options each day.

In addition to the hiking we will be doing lots of other activities – definitely a wine tasting and meal at Bodega Sommos (which is absolutely fantastic), a flower walk with a local expert, a visit to a raptor rescue centre and vulture feeding station. Hopefully we’ll get something arranged with a local butterfly expert too.

We’ll be using two small hotels – Hotel Siete Reyes and Hotel Los Arcos – both right on Ainsa’s 12th century plaza.

We will be eating out in restaurants in Ainsa each night. The restaurants will be excellent including a meal at Callizo which is superb.

Transfers will be to/from Zaragoza on the Sunday evening as normal with pick-ups from the trains station and airport.

We hope to see lots of our guests and friends in Ainsa to help us celebrate 10 years in the Pyrenees!

During the week we visit several of the most beautiful areas in the region, each with their own charm. This is a sample itinerary – the exact routes will depend on the weather. The itinerary below is very brief as we are still exploring new hikes in the area but rest assure there will be a brilliant set of hikes offered. Routes will be of varying levels with Phil taking nice easy routes and Ken beasting you up the steepest mountains he can find!

Arrive Aínsa.

Choice of hikes in the Valle de Pineta – one of Ordesa’s kilometre deep valleys. One route will visit the hanging valley of Llanos de la Larri and the other heading up to the Balcon de Pineta.

Hikes in the area of the valley Chistau – a valley which heads towards the peak of Posets (the second highest in the Pyrenees).

Today we’ll head to Peña Montañesa (2295m) – the impressive limestone cliffs to the north of Ainsa. Here the harder walk will take the steep path to the summit while the easier walks will skirt around the bottom of the cliffs.

Thursday – rest day

In the morning we’ll do a guided tour of the eco-museum in Ainsa including a visit to the raptor rescue centre where we can see eagle owls, short toed eagles and other raptors that are recovering from accidents or been rescued from illegal captivity.

In the afternoon we’ll do a tour of bodega Sommos – a super modern vineyard in the Somontano wine region with architecture in the style of the Guggenheim. After the tour we’ll do a wine tasting followed by our evening meal.

Today we explore the Añisclo Canyon. One option will be to hike in the floor of the canyon and the other to take a windy 4×4 track high up on the eastern side of the canyon. From here there is a relatively easy route to the summit of Sestrales (2101m) which has spectacular views over all of the peaks of Ordesa and the canyon floor a dizzying kilometre below.

Today’s hikes are in the region around the large reservoirs south of Ainsa. The river between the two reservoirs has carved a steep gorge which has a lovely path around it. There will also be a route up to a pair of ermita’s and the remains of an old castle.

Hotel Siete Reyes

In a lovely stone building in the arches of the main square of Aínsa. Hotel “Siete Reyes” or “Seven Kings” was named after a legend of the original Kings of Sobrarbe and its six rooms, of which three emerge into the square, are named after the kings, with the wine cellar named after the seventh king.

The rooms are wonderful with stone, wood and alabaster. Three rooms overlook the square and the other three have spectacular views to the mountains behind. All rooms are en-suite.

Breakfasts are taken in the medieval bodega under the hotel – a fascinating space with a stone arched ceiling and the wine vat where they used to crush the grapes.

There is free wi-fi throughout the hotel.

Hotel Los Arcos

A comfortable and cozy hotel in Plaza Mayor with lovely rooms. Again three rooms overlook the plaza and the other three the mountains behind.

Los Arcos offers a buffet breakfast, which includes alternative gluten-free and diabetic foods along with a great variety of local homemade specialities. All the rooms are en-suite with spa baths.

There are free tea and coffee making facilities on the ground floor and wi-fi throughout the hotel.
