Pine Processionary Caterpillar – Thaumetopoea pityocampa

The Pine processionary caterpillar makes this nest specifically in pine trees. Inside the nest there are hundreds of caterpillars. They feed on the pine needles on the tree and are very destructive. Once they have decimated one tree they move on to another pine tree; this is causing quite a problem in the Pyrenees killing hundreds of trees.
These caterpillars come with a warning too – it is wise not to touch them or even brush past their nests as your skin will react with painful blisters!
