Alpine snowbell – soldanella alpina

This is one of the first plants of the season to flower. It flowers as soon as the snow melts by growing it’s dark red flower stem up through thin patches of snow. The dark colour of its stem absorbs sun light encouraging the snow around it to melt, this allows the leaves of the snowbell to then start to develop more quickly and the plant to flower.
