Rasal to Loarre Castle

On the ride to the summit of Puchilibro

On the ridge to the summit of Puchilibro

On Sunday Anna and I hiked with the Sabinanigo walking club from a village called Rasal to Loarre Castle taking in the peak Puchilibro (1595m).

We set off from Rasal and steadily climbed through a lovely forest.

There was the usual late breakfast/early lunch which meant the passing round of numerous wineskins – bit early on a Sunday morning for me!

There was an impressive variety of the flowers on the route up and we saw hepatica, primrose, cowslips, globe daisies, alpine narcissus, vetch,  common toadflax, white ashpodels (first I’ve seen in flower this year) and the relatively rare evergreen candytuft which has a pretty white flower.

Final climb up to Puchilibro was along a crest with great views on either side. Unfortunately the clouds came in and spoiled our views from the summit.

From then on it was downhill to Loarre Castle. It looked great approached from above. The castle was built in the 11th century during the reconquista. It’s a superb castle to explore – read more about it’ s history on our Loarre Castle page.
