Walking in the Valle de Tena

The Valle de Tena stretches twenty kilometres from the village of Biescas north to the French border. Flanked on both sides by numerous peaks rising well over 2500m you can discover a new vista with each corner you turn. The southern end of the valley is dominated by the cliffs of the Sierra de la Partacua and Sierra de Tendeñera, while higher up the valley opens up into wide open pastures.

Take a look at our interactive map with photos of the valleys and the views you’ll get when out walking.

Many Hike Pyrenees holidays are based in Panticosa at the heart of the valley and there are a huge range of walks available nearby - we want to give you a flavour of the sights you can expect in the valley and share with you some of our favourite spots.

Punta del Pacino

Grade: Easy/Moderate
Time: 4-5 hours
Visited on: Lakes & Valleys

The peak of Punta del Pacino is easily overlooked but it’s wonderful position in the centre of the valley gives superb panoramic views of the surrounding area. A well graded path passes through woodland and pastures and circles the summit giving ever changing vistas. The final approach to the summit is a little steeper but as you take the final steps you are rewarded by great views in every direction. The cliffs of the Sierra de Partacua dominate the skyline to the south and west, while to the east a clutch of 3000m peaks reveal themselves. We end the walk by visiting the pretty village of Sallent de Gallego where we’ll have a  well earned drink.

Ibon de Piedrafita

Grade: Easy
Time: 4 hours
Visited on: Lakes & Valleys

Spectacularly situated under the thousand metre cliffs of the Sierra de Partacua, the Ibon de Piedrafita is an excellent place to spot vultures soaring overhead. The route passes through beautiful meadows and takes us to the ‘Arco Geotectonico’ - a 20m high natural arch of stone. The up-close views of the cliffs to the south are contrasted with expansive views across the valley to the north - an excellent trip and not too much hard work for the legs!

Tour of Pic du Midi d’Ossau

Grade: Moderate/Demanding
Time: 6-7 hours
Visited on: Peaks & Passes

Pic du Midi d’Ossau is one of the most famous and distinctive peaks in the Pyrenees. Standing just on the French side of the border the peak dominates the upper reaches of the Valle de Tena and this circuit is one of the Pyrenees’ classic treks. The route takes us through some wooded valleys, crosses three high cols and past the Refugio Pombie - where climbers congregate before tackling the shear cliffs. We continue and leave the mountain to the climbers.

Ibon de Sabacos

Grade: Easy (July/August only)
Time: Variety of walks between 1 and 4 hours
Visited on: Lakes & Valleys

In July and August a gondola lift takes you from Panticosa high into the mountains above. From the top station there are a number of excellent routes. One of the best takes us past the Ibon de Sabacos and across into La Ripera with the cliffs of the Sierra de Tendeñera looming high above us.An excellent way of getting into the high mountains without having to do the legwork.

These are just a sample of the many excellent routes that we visit on our guided walking holidays.
