Hike Pyrenees Walking Holidays Spain

Getting to the Pyrenees

Where are we?

We are based in the Aragonese Pyrenees and the mountains surrounding us are some of the highest and most spectacular in the Spain.

We use four bases - the villages of Panticosa and Biescas in the Valle de Tena, Torla for our Discover Ordesa holidays and Jaca for those learning Spanish. Each has it’s own charm and there are excellent walking options from all the villages.

Zaragoza transfers

We provide transfers from Zaragoza airport or train station on a Sunday evening. Transfers are timed to meet the Ryan Air flight from London Stansted. From Zaragoza it is two hours to Panticosa or Biescas, slightly longer to Torla.

Currently there is a problem with the Ryan Air site and no flights to or from Zaragoza can be booked. We’ve spoken to them and they’ve said the flights will run and the problem should be fixed in around a week. If by any chance this flight route did not run we’d provide transfers from Barcelona airport on Sunday afternoons. EasyJet flies to Barcelona from several UK airports and a couple of other airlines fly there too.

Until the flights are sorted out if you’d like us to pencil you in and reserve your space that’s no problem. Once the flights are available to book (or we’ve changed transfers to Barcelona) you can finalise the booking and pay your deposit.

London Stansted to Zaragoza

From the UK the simplest way to get to Zaragoza is on the Ryan Air flight from London Stansted. There are flights year round.

Flights start from under £100 (including taxes) and are generally cheaper the earlier you book.

Flights are on Sunday evenings departing Stansted at 6.55pm.

Zaragoza rail links

Zaragoza has excellent rail connections with both Madrid and Barcelona on the AVE high speed train. This travels at over 200 km/h and is very comfortable. The journey takes roughly 1 ½ hours from either Barcelona-Sants or Madrid Puerta de Atocha stations with a return ticket costing around 90 euros.

For more information and train times give us a call or visit www.renfe.com - click on ‘welcome’ for the English version of the site.

Renting a car - airport options

If you’re taking one of our self drive holidays then there are a number of airports that are within driving distance. The major hire car companies have offices at all these airports. Most of these airports are served by Easyjet, Ryan Air and/or one of the other budget airlines from various airports.

Principal airports and driving times are:

Barcelona - 4 ½ hours                 Pau - 2 hours
Toulouse - 4 hours                      Zaragoza - 2 hours
Bilbao - 4 hours                          Reus - 4 hours
Girona - 5 ½ hours                      Pamplona - 2 hours

Bus connections

The bus network in Spain is excellent and tickets are cheap. The nearest bus station is Sabiñanigo and from there you can catch a cab to Biescas or Panticosa. If you’re coming from Barcelona or Zaragoza change at Huesca. If you’re coming from the west (Pamplona or Bilbao) change at Jaca. View routes and timetables at www.alosa.es

Ferries

Brittany Ferries have three routes from the UK to Spain: Portsmouth-Bilbao, Portsmouth-Santander and  Plymouth-Santander.  The ferries are a great way to travel and have private cabins, restaurants, bars and viewing decks. All of the routes allow you to take your own car and crossings take around 24 hours.

The drive to Hike Pyrenees from Bilbao takes four hours and four and a half hours from Santander. Visit www.brittany-ferries.co.uk for timetables and prices.

Driving through FranceDriving  through France is an option. Allow about 15 hours driving from the northern ports. Taking the ferry one way and then meandering back through France over a few days is an excellent option.
