Centred around a 13th Century cathedral, it's narrow streets wind around stone buildings. There are several bars and restaurants as well as a few shops and a small supermarket selling all the necessities.
Hike Pyrenees guests staying at the Hotel Casa Morlans receive discounted entry to the municipal outdoor pool a short walk away - a dip in the pool is very welcome in the hot summer months.
From Panticosa we are in easy reach of all the Valle de Tena has to offer and also some stunning neighbouring regions. The red, strangely eroded rock formations of Los Mallos are in easy driving distance and make for a good day combined with a visit to Castle Loarre one of the finest in Northern Spain. There are numerous other small valleys & villages close by - rarely visited and full of charm.
The glacial valleys, rocky summits and high mountain pastures make the Spanish Pyrenees a walkers paradise. Walks vary from rambles across flower filled meadows to exhilarating cliff-top paths. The one thing every walk has in common is stunning mountain scenery and breathtaking views. The climate is superb with fabulously sunny days throughout the year.
But the Pyrenees aren't just great for hikers. The easily eroded limestone and the deep gorges it creates makes this area a world class canyoning destination. There are literally hundreds of routes of all levels within a short journey of Panticosa. There are several great rivers for white water rafting, hydro-speeding and canoeing and Via Ferrata routes area available in several locations nearby.
The village of Panticosa is wonderfully positioned, nestled amongst the high mountains of the Valle De Tena. The vertical cliffs of the Sierra de Tendeņera form the skyline to the south, while the north and east are dominated by a collection of 3000m peaks including the impressive Pico del Infierno. To the west the rocky walls of the Sierra de Partacua rise from grassy meadows.
Just a short distance further up from Panticosa, the Valle de Tena opens up to wide, grassy high plateau with beautiful views of impressive peaks such as Midi D'Osseau, Anayet and Arriel. Many of our walks explore this area which is easily accessible but has a fabulous high mountain feel.
The Rio Gorgol is one of several excellent canyoning venues in the valley. There are several horse-riding centres and climbing schools both in Escarrilla and right at the door in Panticosa.
We are based in the picturesque village of Panticosa, wonderfully positioned in the Valle de Tena, near the French border and surrounded by the high mountains of the Aragonese Pyrenees. From here we are ideally located to visit the most beautiful areas in the Pyrenees. The nearby Ordesa & Mount Perdido National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - contains some of the most magnificent scenery in Europe. The area's natural beauty and wildlife are stunning and visitors are often treated to the sight of vultures and eagles circling above their heads. See exactly where we are on our map.
The magnificent scenery of the Ordesa National Park is one of the undiscovered gems of Europe and an indisputable highlight of the Pyrenees. Stunning glacial valleys with cliffs of over 1000m and peaks rising to over 3000m make a fantastically diverse landscape with something to offer everyone.
Enjoy a wonderful ramble through the beech forests and meadows alongside the Rio Arazas. Pretty cascades of clear blue water contrast against the vertical cliffs towering above you on both sides.
For those with ahead for heights the 'faja' paths carved dizzyingly high into the cliff tops are outstanding and you are rewarded for the steep climb by jaw dropping views across the park and down onto the Spanish plains.
All of our walking weeks will visit an area of the park for at least one day.
