Iris Iris Latifolia

There are fields of Iris on many of our walks in July and August.

Edelweiss Leontopodium alpinum

Found in the high mountains - common on the Faja de Pelay and Faja de las Flores in Ordesa.

Burnt Orchid Orchis ustulata

A delicate looking but hardy orchid found in the valleys and in the mountains up to 2000m.

Heartsease Viola tricolor

Just one of the many wild violas found in the meadows.

Woodcock Orchid Ophrys scolopax

This orchid's bloom resembles the insects it needs to attract in order to pollinate.

Alpine Narcissus Narcissis alpestris

Flowering in late spring or early summer this is one of the few white members of the narcissus family.

Large Flowered Butterwort Pinguicula grandiflora

This insect eating plant has greasy leaves to trap its prey and absorbs nutrients through its leaves.

Fragrant Orchid Gymnadenia conopsea

Flowers between June and August with a strong scent but only when close up to the flowers.

Acanthus Thistle Carlina acanthifolia

A ground flowering thistle at it's best in late summer.

Fly Orchid Ophrys insectifera

Flowering in early summer this is another orchid that resembles the insects that it is trying to attract.

Alpine Snowbell Soldanella alpina

A delicate flower found in the harshest places - common around Refugio Goriz in Ordesa.

Globe Daisy Globularia nudicaulis

Not related to the common daisy but a pretty flower found on many of our walks.

Wild Tulip Tulipa Sylvestris

This beautiful rare flower can be found on the cliffs above San Juan de la Pena.

Round Headed Rampion Phyteuma orbiculare

Bright blue flower common in the Valle de Tena.

Martagon Lily Lilium martagon

A spectacular flower growing up to a metre tall with numerous flowers - found in the Ordesa Valley.

Fritillary Fritillaria lusitanica

A rare and unusual flower with dusky red petals that and a yellow inner.

Corona del Rey (King's Crown) Saxifraga Longifolia

Grows slowly for 2 or 3 years before bursting into a huge stem of flowers 60cm long and then dying.

Grannys Nightcap Aquilegia vulgaris

This popular garden flower is commonly found wild in the Pyrenees.

Grape Hyacinth Muscari neglectum

One of a several flowers known as Grape Hyacinth and flowering early in the spring.

 

Flowers of the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees are justifiably known as the flower garden of Europe. The abundance and variety of flowers is spectacular and our walks take us through meadows of iris, orchids and white asphodel. These photos were all taken on our hikes this summer.
